Could you please explain what is the need of this Rectifier Transformer?

As the word "Transform" means change or transfer.
The transformer is a device that transforms power from primary side to secondary side with the help of the phenomena of Electro-Magnetic Induction.

Power Transformers are the devices that only transformers power based on the voltage requirements at seondary side. The voltage level can be either be increased(step up) or decreased(step down) depending upon the requirement of voltage at the secondary side and POWER remains same.

Rectifier transformer:
Rectifier transformers are used for industrial processes which require a significant direct current (dc) supply. Rectifier contains two teir process:

1. Rectification of AC to DC done via diode circuitry or thyristors circuitry.
2. Amplification of Chopped / DC current.
