Why do resistors posses tolerance?

Because like everything else, they cannot be manufactured with perfect accuracy.

Further, in nearly every application, a tolerance of ± 10% is more than adequate.

Perhaps the best analog designer I ever knew used to say “if you need any value except 1, 2.2. or 4.7 plus the multiplier, you’d better be able to justify it at design review time”
