Know your Memory CardsBy : Sankalp - 04-Apr-2018
Many times we find complexity when we are going to buy memory cards. Let’s find to inquire about this tiny phantasmagoria.

Memory cards are the devices that are used as secondary storage device for mobile phones, camcorder, digital video recorder, digital camera, laptops, tabs, palmtops etc. Technically they are regarded as Non-Volatile memory SD cards where SD stands for SECURE DIGITAL and non-volatile means that the memory card haven’t require any power feed to run the system of memory card.

Three kinds of memory cards are there
(1) SD.
(2) SDHC.
(3) SDXC.

SD
- This type of memory card was the very first generation which are generally 2.1mm thick and posses maximum capacity of 2GB.

- The SD memory cards are found in three shapes viz. Micro, Mini and Regular. The regular SD card fits into the niche made for it and remaining two some times requires an adaptor to fit in. Regular SD cards measure approximately 1.25 by 0.95 inches, miniSD cards measure 0.87 by 0.79 inches and microSD cards measure 0.43 by 0.59 inches. You should buy the correct size SD card for your device, as you cannot fit a larger SD card into a smaller slot.

SDHC
- This is second generation of memory card which arrived in the year 2006, SDHC referred as Secure Digital High Capacity having capacity ranges from 4GB to 32GB. This is the most famous series and widely used around the world. Study shows that almost 70% of smart phones used this series to increase the memory of the phone. Generally these come in Micro and Mini.
SDXC
- The third generation has arrived in the year 2009, which is referred as SDXC. SDXC means Secure Digital Extended Capacity having capacity ranges from massive storage of 48 GB up to 2 TB. Its only available on microSD size.
By the way, UHS (Ultra High Speed bus) and SDIO (Secure Digital Input Output) formats have also come up. Memory cards with UHS 1 and UHS 3 formats have also come in, which are mostly used in commercial equipment.

Categories in Memory Cards:
(a)Based on the access speed R/W speed the memory cards are being divided into following clases which are as follows:-

(1) Class 2 :- Speed 2MBps.
(2) Class 4 :- Speed 4MBps.
(3) Class 6 :- Speed 6MBps.
(4) Class 10:- Speed 10MBps.
(5) UHS (Ultra High Speed) 1:-10MBps speed is achieved by these class of memory cards.
(6) UHS 3 :- 30 MBps is the speed.
(b) On the basis of video class speed mark. Which supports 8K and Multi-File video recording and R/W operations.

This class is being made by SD association. This class offers best performance under Ultra high resolution video recording, high quality video surfing and multi-file recording. Multi-file data is defined as a kind of file recording, where data is recorded simultaneously with data from another sensor, such as altitude, geographical meridian and location data in drones. These are :-
(1) V6 :- Standard Video recording which supports 720p-1080p of all aspect ratios. At the rate of speed of 10MBps.
(2) V10 : Supports Standard Video recording of resolution 1080p-2K video recording. At the rate of speed of 30MBps
(3) V60 : This category supports 4K video recording and its processing and comes in speeds of 30MBps and 60 MBps.
(4) V90 : This is the hot category and this category is in developing stage. It supports 8K video recording and video and image processing. It speeds ranges from 60MB/sec to 90MB/sec.
Hope this information will help you a lot in understanding about memory cards and when you are going to buy a new memory card aforementioned specs should be keep in mind before buying.
